Here is the last annual report for the Rappaport Center for Law and Public Service, completed in May 2014. Unfortunately Suffolk University closed the Center on July 31, 2014, for financial reasons. We are proud of the Center’s accomplishments since its establishment in 2007. Some personnel details have been redacted from this version of the report.
Two commentaries written by students in my Law and Public Policy class have proved to be newsworthy. As this story explains, Governor Deval Patrick has just signed legislation that was discussed by Erica Mattison, JD ’13 in a commentary published in Rappaport Briefing last year. And as this story explains, Governor Patrick has also approved regulations that would ban the shackling of inmates in labor, a practice discussed by Hilary Detmold JD ’12 in a 2012 commentary for Rappaport Briefing. The Rappaport Center hosted a lunch roundtable on the policing of the Occupy protests at Suffolk Law today. The lead speaker was Professor Alex Vitale of Brooklyn College, who discussed the policing strategies of ten major US cities. Comments were provided by Boston PD Superintendent in Chief Dan Linskey and attorney Ben Wish of Todd & Weld. The roundtable series is supported by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. Rogan Kersh, Associate Dean at the Wagner School/NYU, visited the Rappaport Center today to give a talk on implementation of the Affordable Care Act — part of our BCBS/Rappaport Roundtable series. Nancy Turnbull of Harvard’s School of Public Health served as commentator.
